How to help children sleep in summer
10/08/22
On a hot day your children can splash in a cool paddling pool and eat ice lollies to their hearts’ content but as nighttime looms, parents fear the sleepless nights due to the heat.
We have put together our top tips to make slumber more comfortable for little ones:
Cover the windows
It’s crucial to ensure all curtains are closed and to keep blinds down. If you have a black-out blind it would be good to use it. The curtains need to be kept closed all day in preparation for the night as you don’t want any hot sunshine getting in. If its cooler inside than out, you should keep your windows closed and if they are open make sure little ones can’t reach any cords or ties.
Preparation for the heat
It’s important to prepare for hot, sweaty nights. Remove waterproof mattress covers from the bed as they can cause you to overheat, unless you have one that is designed to help with cooling. It’s a good idea to freeze pillowcases, sheets and duvet covers. That way, when your kids come to get in their bed, its lovely and cold. It’s a good idea to get Gel pillows, which use a cooling gel to reduce heat buildup, helping to regulate body temperature whilst they sleep.
Hot night
A cool bath before bed will help to reduce your child’s body temperature. Make sure they are hydrated throughout the day and have access to fluids with a drink by their bed at night, and a cool flannel for their forehead. A free-standing fan is a good idea to help circulate air. An extra good tip is to fill a hot water bottle with water remove cover and pop it in the freezer, replace the cover and place at the foot of the bed.
Hot temperatures can make us all irritable and fractious and this won’t help sleep. Reading a book or playing a game in front of a fan before bed will help children relax and fall asleep.
