Roll up, roll up! – A guide to rolled-up mattresses
09/03/22
Some mattresses are practically impossible to alter from their rigid, rectangular shape but others are more innovative. They can be vacuum-packed for ease of movement and delivery and can even be re-rolled – to be used only when you need them, as when overnight visitors call.
A compact solution
It's quite amazing that you can actually compress a mattress into such a small space. The packaging process is key. They are vacuum-packed and heat sealed in a protective tubular bag or case, which restricts the mattress’s dimensions. This is after it has been flattened down in a compression machine and rolled tightly into place. This makes it both lightweight and easy to pick up.
Rolled mattresses have an array of advantages. One of the key ones is that they have less impact on the environment when they are being transported. Consolidating loads, to make maximum use of available freighter space, has long been standard practice in the haulage industry, and mattresses are notoriously bulky in transit. However, many more rolled-up mattresses can fit in and be carried in a van or truck, than stacks of uncompressed, unrolled mattresses. They also take up a lot less space in our showroom, which ensures that we usually have them in stock.
Take your own mattress home - easily
They can even fit in the back of your car, for collection, and can be a better option for older customers, if they are transporting the mattress themselves. Being rolled-up also means they are easier to lift and manoeuvre when they are delivered to our customers’ homes.
Access all areas
One of the biggest problems when it comes to mattress delivery is the question of access. Rolled-up mattresses are more compact and effectively lighter. Mattresses usually have to be carried up at least one flight of stairs, as bedrooms are usually on the first floor. In an apartment building, or a block of flats, the only access might be by multiple flights of stairs, or a lift, which may not be large enough to accommodate the mattress. The rolled-up option is much more convenient and are a really good option when it comes to properties where access is an issue.
Time to unpack
Setting up a rolled-up mattress couldn’t be simpler. Once the mattress is in situ, just carefully unpack the mattress from its vacuum packaging and roll it out to its full size on your bed frame, divan or base. The mattress will expand on its own, basically re-inflating the mattress. Times vary on how long it takes for the mattress to regain its original size and shape, from an hour or two, to 24 hours. It depends on how big the mattress is and what it’s made of. A memory foam mattress, for example, is filled with pockets of air anyway, to make it more comfortable.
As an affordable alternative to conventional mattresses, rolled-up mattresses are a popular option. They’re space-saving, environmentally-friendly and very comfortable – what’s not to like?
