Turn your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary
26/01/22
We have shared our tips for getting a good night’s sleep. To help you drift off quicker for longer, here’s our seven point summary of how you can turn your bedroom from the space where you sleep into a real sleep sanctuary.
- If possible, don’t use your bedroom for work and, if you can, keep televisions and laptops at least six feet away from your bed.
- Optimal room temperature is probably cooler than you might expect at around 60–68F so make sure your heating isn’t turned right up and you have plenty of ventilation with an open window if needs be.
- We sleep better in the dark so making your bedroom as dark as possible is key. In fact, exposure to room light during sleep hours suppresses the hormone melatonin, that regulates sleep-wake cycles, by more than 50%.
- If you live somewhere quite noisy, such as near a busy road, try and control the amount of noise reaching your bedroom by reducing or disguising it. Ear plugs can be very effective, while some people find it beneficial to use an appliance that produces a steady white noise to obscure outside sounds. You could use a fan or purchase a white noise device designed specifically to provide this kind of steady hum.
- Keep your mobile in another room – the world will not end if it is not within your sight or reach!
- If you use your mobile as an alarm, buy an old fashioned alarm clock (which provides less radiation). If you buy a digital alarm, make sure this does not have blue light.
- If you cannot drop off after 20 – 30 minutes don’t lie there fighting the mattress, get up do a job, or just read until you feel tired enough to try again but refrain from doing anything stimulating.
Don’t forget, a good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything. Sleep well!
