Give the gift of sleep for Mother’s Day

The origins of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day, which this year falls on Sunday March 27th, is celebrated every year but what are its origins? Way back in medieval times, servants were given a day off every year to visit their ‘mother’ church, in other words, the church close to where they grew up. Traditionally, people would return home to attend a church service on this day, accompanied by their own mother and other members of their family. The day, which fell on the fourth Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent, became known as Mothering Sunday, or Mother’s Day. Over time, the religious meaning has been somewhat forgotten and Mother’s Day in the UK has evolved to have more in common with the US version of Mother’s Day, as an opportunity to show your mother love and appreciation and basically spoil her rotten on one special day of the year.
Women don’t sleep as well as men
Generally speaking, did you know that although on average, women tend to sleep for slightly longer than men, they experience inferior quality sleep? One reason for this could be that women are usually more likely to get up to look after other people, which interrupts their sleep. Women are also more likely than men to suffer with certain sleep problems. These include insomnia, which means difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. This problem is likely to get worse as women get older too. Pain can also lead to problems with sleeping and women are more likely than men to suffer certain painful conditions, such as arthritis. Restless legs syndrome is also more common among women than it is among men and can make sleeping very difficult.
This Mother’s Day, why not do what you can to give your mum the gift of sleep? There are many measures you can suggest or take to improve the quality of your mum’s sleep, from creating a perfect sleep sanctuary, to finding the perfect mattress or just buying a new pillow. In the short term of course, there’s no better Mother’s Day treat than giving your mum the chance to have a lie-in and stay in bed all morning, with no interruptions, or spoil her with breakfast in bed.
